ARSENAL signed Porto playmaker Fabio Vieira after agreeing a £30m fee to fend off Premier League rivals.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder will become Mikel Arteta’s first big signing this summer.

The Gunners have moved quickly to snap up the exciting youngster ahead of neighbors Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool.

It looks like Arsenal are ready to launch another Scallop in the Premier League.

And 26 years after Patrick Vieira stormed north London, Arsenal are hoping the Portuguese Under-21 international can be as successful as his namesake.

Vieira has only played two seasons in Porto’s first team and has already drawn comparisons to Bruno Fernandes in Portugal.

He was named player of the tournament at last year’s UEFA Under-21 championship and produced seven goals and 16 assists for Porto last season.

However, his impending move to the Emirates was kept completely off Arsenal’s radar after Porto initially stated that he would not be sold for less than the £42m release clause in his contract.

But the Portuguese champions have now accepted Arsenal’s offer of £30m plus the possibility of a further £4m in add-ons.

Talks are now taking place over personal terms, with a five-year deal on the table and hopes the deal will be done by the weekend.

Vieira will become Arsenal’s second summer signing after 19-year-old winger Marquinhos joined from Sao Paulo in a £3m deal this week.

Now Arsenal must decide whether to continue their long-running search for Leicester’s Youri Tielemans, who plays in a much deeper position than Vieira.

They are also still in negotiations with Manchester City for Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus and are confident of securing a deal for a fee of around £40m.
