Arrest of Two Men and a Woman with Arsenal and Drugs in Heredia: Investigation and Preventive Detention

Two men and a woman, who were detained over the weekend in Heredia with an arsenal that included fragmentation grenades, will face three months of preventive detention while the criminal investigation against them progresses.

The Press Office of the Public Ministry reported this resolution after the conclusion of a hearing on precautionary measures that began on Tuesday at 10 am and lasted until late in the afternoon of that day. At said hearing, the Prosecutor’s Office requested preventive detention for the two foreign individuals and the detained Costa Rican woman.

The detainees are two men named Rivera, Nicaraguans aged 35 and 39, as well as a woman named Pavón, aged 61. The Public Force arrested them in San Francisco de Heredia on Saturday night after intimidating a driver in the center of Heredia with a heavy weapon. They were traveling in a Toyota Land Cruiser with two ballistic vests and three firearms of prohibited use, in addition to a 9 millimeter caliber pistol. One of the foreigners had an arrest warrant for aggravated robbery.

On Sunday, agents of the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) carried out a raid on the residence related to the suspects in La Lilliana de San Francisco, Heredia, where they detained the mother of the detainees. Inside the house, a large arsenal was found that included 37 firearms of prohibited use, 12 pistols, a grenade launcher, three fragmentation grenades, ¢20 million in cash, 50 kilos of marijuana, 159 bottles of ketamine and several “packs” of cocaine, among other items.

The possession, purchase, sale, export, concealment, manufacture or use of prohibited weapons carries a penalty of between 4 and 8 years in prison. In addition, the defendants face other charges that could result in sentences of up to 15 years in prison due to drug possession, according to the psychotropic law.
