Aifa writes: “In the first days following the vaccination with Vaxzevria, very rare cases of capillary leak syndrome have been reported. “It is therefore emphasized that in some of these cases it was a clinical history with Cls, the disease in question. Of the numerous cases that occurred, however, only one fatal outcome was reported. This is enough for the EMA to indicate, on 11 June last, not to use AZ for those who previously suffered from this syndrome.
But what is it about, in detail? Capillary leak syndrome is characterized by acute episodes of edema affecting mainly the limbs, hypotension, haemoconcentration and hypoalbuminemia. Patients with an acute episode if affected following vaccination require rapid diagnosis. Supportive intensive care is usually required, although reactions are considered to be very rare.
How is Cls recognized? Patients with the syndrome they may have rapid swelling of the arms and legs, a sudden weight gain and a feeling of faintness due to low blood pressure, Aifa underlines in the last widespread note.
