Battle between Armenia and Azerbaijan
Since the 1980s, Yerevan and Baku have been fighting over, in particular, the Nagorno-Karabakh region which is part of Azerbaijan but was de facto inhabited and ruled by Armenians. The conflict over the area flared up in late September and is estimated to have killed thousands of people.
In early November, the arch-rivals led by Russia closed a peace agreement, in which it was agreed that Azerbaijan would be given control of parts of the region that Armenia had had to give up in the battle. There is great frustration about this in Armenia. A Russian peacekeeping force monitors compliance with the agreement, which has already been signed several times has been violated.
