Armenia reports 2317 fallen soldiers in the fighting for Nagorno-Karabakh

On Saturday, Armenia estimated the number of its dead soldiers from the last Armenian-Azerbaijani war on Nagorno-Karabakh at 2317. However, this figure is not final. The AFP agency informed about it today with reference to the Armenian Ministry of Health. The conflict, which has lasted since September 27, ended with a treaty signed by the countries on the night from Monday to Tuesday.

“The forensic service has so far taken over 2,317 bodies of soldiers, including the unidentified,” said Alina Nikoghosian, a spokeswoman for the Armenian Ministry of Health. According to her, the exchange of victims’ bodies with Azerbaijan has only just begun, so the numbers are not final.

Prior to the current update, Armenian authorities reported 1,339 dead members of the armed forces and fifty civilian casualties. Azerbaijan did not disclose its military losses. He reported 93 civilians dead.

The agreement means important territorial gains for Azerbaijan. On its basis, Moscow sent a military contingent to Nagorno-Karabakh to oversee the ceasefire. Protests erupted in Armenia following the announcement of the agreement. Demonstrators stormed the seat of parliament and the government office, which they devastated, and 17 political parties called on Prime Minister Nikola Pašinjan to resign.

Pashinjan explained his decision to conclude an agreement with Russian and Azerbaijan officials to end the fighting by trying to avoid the collapse of the front and prevent the sacrifice of the lives of thousands of Armenian soldiers.
