Armenia: coup and assassination attempt on prime minister thwarted

Armenia’s security service says it has foiled a coup attempt and an assassination attempt on Prime Minister Pasjinian. An unknown number of suspects have been detained. The coup plotters would the agreement reject that Armenia concluded this week with Russia and Azerbaijan on ending the Nagorno-Karabakh battle.

The agreement states that Armenia will return several areas in or around Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijan in the coming weeks and that Azerbaijan will retain control over areas it has conquered from the Armenians in recent weeks.

Prime Minister Pasjinian said earlier this week that he had no choice, as continuing fighting would have resulted in even more territory loss.

After the agreement was concluded, opponents destroyed the parliament building in the Armenian capital Yerevan:
