Arib: politicians ‘flee’ Parliament building under pressure from threats

How long will we still be the country of cycling prime ministers and MPs on the Binnenhof that you can address openly? In the first eight months of this year, 44 reports and 17 reports were made by politicians, said Chamber president Khadija Arib in News hour. That is exclusive of the hundreds of threats against PVV leaders Wilders.

Arib is concerned that the protesters who now stand outside the door “daily” are not content to demonstrate peacefully. “They attack MPs, touch them and scoff at journalists and politicians,” she says.

This means that employees and visitors prefer to avoid the House building. “There have been times when we went out through a different exit at the end of the meeting. It’s a very grim atmosphere.”

According to Arib, these demonstrators are confused people and it is hardly possible to talk to them. “Politicians are quite thick-skinned and have to listen to the unease that exists, but having a conversation is almost impossible,” she says.

Yesterday Arib expressed all her concerns, as the threats have a major impact on employees, journalists and civil servants. In a letter she wrote to the mayor of The Hague last week, Arib asked whether the demonstrations could be moved. “How it is organized is his responsibility, but I want MPs to be able to do their work in freedom and security.”
