Are These Two Strong Candidates Who Will Become President Director of Bank Mandiri?

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia Last week, five bankers from PT Bank Mandiri Tbk (BMRI) were assigned to PT Bank Negara Indonesia Tbk (BBNI). This includes its main director, Royke Tumilaar, who was appointed as the main director of BNI.

This was decided at the Extraordinary General Meeting of Shareholders (EGMS) of BNI this Wednesday (2/9/2020).

With this decision, currently the position of President Director of Bank Mandiri is temporarily filled by Hery Gunardi who acts as Plt. President Director as well as Deputy President Director of Bank Mandiri.

“If a president director is not available, according to the rules, Mr. Hery as the Acting Managing Director prepares the EGM, it will depend on the shareholders, when the Ministry of BUMN will appoint my definitive replacement president, at the latest in late October,” Royke said in a virtual press conference in Jakarta, Wednesday. (2/9/2020).

State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Minister Erick Thohir said this position would soon be vacant because as a shareholder representative, the ministry had prepared a replacement to fill the position.

It is reported that the EGMS will be held on October 21, 2020.

Then who is nominated to fill this position?

One of the strongest candidates to become the president director of Bank Mandiri is the current Deputy Director, Hery Gunardi. He was a member of the merger team for the establishment of Bank Mandiri in 1998-1999 which previously started his career at Bank Pembangunan Indonesia (Bapindo).

Hery was born in 1962 and obtained his Master of Business Administration in Finance from the University of Oregon, USA (1991). Have professional certifications, such as Chartered Financial Consultant from the Singapore College of Insurance (2004), Certified Wealth Manager from the University of Greenwich, England (2005), Certified Financial Planner from the Indonesian Financial Planning Standardization Agency (2007).

While at Bank Mandiri, he served as Director of AXA Mandiri Financial Services (2003-2006), Group Head of Wealth Management and concurrently as President Commissioner of AXA Mandiri Financial Services (2006-2009).

Then became Group Head of Jakarta Network (2009-2011) and Group Head of Distribution Network I (2011-2013). During the period 2009 – 2013 he was also the President Commissioner of Mandiri Investment Management.

Then in 2013 he was appointed as Director of Micro and Retail Banking. Then he became Director of Consumer Banking (2015), Director of Distributions (2016-2018), Director of Small Business & Networks (2018) who subsequently changed his invoice to become Director of Business & Networks (2019).

In December 2019 – February 2020 he served as Director of Consumer & Retail Transaction. Then appointed as Deputy President Director at the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders (AGMS) in February 2020.

One other candidate who is also said to be filling this position is one of the Bank Mandiri alumni who has been around to fill the position of directors at another BUMN, namely Pahala Nugraha Mansury.

Pahala started his career at Bank Mandiri in 2003. He has held various positions at the bank, such as group head corporate development, change management office, accounting, economic research, EVP finance and strategy coordinator, and chief financial officer.

He attended the University of Indonesia and the Stern School of Business, New York University. The man who was born in 1971 started his career as a management consultant at Andersen Consulting until 1997.

Then in 998, Pahala worked part time in one of the securities in New York. Then Pahala joined Booz Allen & Hamilton as a senior consultant for one year in 1999. In the same year he also briefly joined the Boston Consulting Group as a leader in several banking projects.

In 2016 – 2017 he was appointed as Director of Finance & Treasury at Bank Mandiri. Only a year later, he was assigned to become the President Director of PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk (GIAA).

His career at this state-owned airline was not long, in 2018 he was then assigned to be the Finance Director of PT Pertamina (Persero). Soon he was transferred back to PT Bank Tabungan Negara Tbk (BBTN), to be precise at the EGMS of Bank BTN on 27 November 2019 and declared effective by the Financial Services Authority (OJK) on 10 February 2020.
