Are masks effective against COVID-19?

Tests have been carried out on several types of masks. From the simple scarf to the FFP2 mask, each of them went on the bench.

Wearing a mask still divides the population. Some people have adopted it. However, others hate it because it is dangerous for health. However, do these masks reduce the spread of the virus by microdroplets? This is what researchers have been trying to prove for a few weeks. To carry out these tests, the research group used a laser, a lens, a mirror, a box and a camera. All these objects are used to visualize how the microdroplets propagate with the different masks.

Martin Fisher, co-author of the study published in Science Advances: We are forced to confirm that during a face to face discussion, microdroplets are expelled from our mouths. You will have understood it well, useless after coughing or sneezing in your elbow. However, which masks tested are the most effective?

The FFP2 mask, the big winner!

During the tests, the FFP2 mask became the big winner. Following we have the surgical masks as well as the polypropylene masks. Then we have the homemade masks. This type of mask is better than nothing, as long as it is made of cotton, washed at 60 degrees. Nevertheless, bandanas or scarves are the ugly ducklings. However, the fact that they do not protect at all is not surprising. The fibers of the fabric separate the microdroplets. This allows them to propagate longer in the air.

If everyone wore a mask, we could stop up to 99% of microdroplets. Wearing a mask is better than nothing. We encourage testing of future masks until the vaccine or drug is found. Eric Westman

However, the question of wearing a mask is still on everyone’s lips. So, are you for or against wearing a mask? Stay alert, COVID-19 is not taking a vacation this summer.
