So, is JPG and JPEG different?

JPG and JPEG are the same

Reported from How To GeekJPG and JPEG are two equivalent file extensions, which refer to the exact same digital image format.

JPG exists because some early Windows computers only supported the three-character extension, but modern devices can recognize JPG and JPEG.

Meanwhile, JPEG stands for “Joint Photographic Experts Group”, which is a technology industry group.

The group created the JPEG image format which is used widely in digital cameras, social media, and websites.

Previously only recognized JPG

The JPEG format dates back to 1992. At that time, most of the world’s personal computers were running Microsoft’s MS-DOS operating system.

At that time, the operating system only supported three-letter file extensions.

As a result, JPEG files acquired the JPG extension on MS-DOS and early Windows platforms.

Meanwhile, the Apple Macintosh platform, which is used by a minority of computer owners, does not have such limitations, so JPEG files are often used.

Currently JPG and JPEG are equivalent

Currently, Windows and macOS can fully handle the JPEG file extension, and most applications understand and can open JPG and JPEG files equally.

So if you have a file with one of the extensions that opens correctly in the image viewer or editor, you don’t need to make any changes.

JPEG and JPG files are the exact same image format, so no conversion is required to convert a JPG file to JPEG, or vice versa.

Instead, all you need to do is rename the image file and change the file extension.

You can also do the same thing in reverse, changing “JPG” to “JPEG”.
