Apple Resolves Dispute with Epic Games in Europe: Major Victory for Digital Markets

On Friday, Apple changed its position regarding its dispute with Epic Games, allowing it to provide an application store on iPhone devices in Europe that competes with the store that manufactures these phones, after a dispute between the two companies that constituted the first test of the new rules regarding digital platforms in the Union. European Union, according to Agence France-Presse.

An Apple spokesman said in an email to Agence France-Presse, “We have held discussions with Epic, and it has pledged to respect the rules, including those related to digital markets,” known by the abbreviation “DMA.” He added, “As a result, Epic Sweden AB was re-accepted into the Apple Developer Program.”

The rules related to digital markets, which entered into force on Thursday in the European Union, obligated six of the world’s technology giants – including Apple – to open their platforms to competition. Epic President Tim Sweeney described this shift as “a great victory for the rule of law in Europe, for the European Commission, and for the freedom of developers around the world.”

Epic Games, whose most prominent game is Fortnite; It announced over the weekend that Apple had prevented it from offering an app store instead of the iPhone manufacturer’s store. On March 2, Apple closed the Epic developer account, which is necessary to launch a store on its devices.

Tim Sweeney described Apple’s move as a “retaliatory measure” for Epic’s public criticism of the group, and likened Apple’s stance to the behavior of “feudal lords who would place the skulls of their former enemies on their palaces” in order to “dissuade others” from criticizing them, according to Agence France-Presse.

In recent years, Epic has intensified its judicial procedures and is communicating with the authorities to force Apple and Google to open their mobile operating systems, iOS and Android (installed on the vast majority of smartphones), to download stores for alternative applications to their applications. The video game developer also seeks to get technology giants to stop charging a large commission on purchases made by users (bonuses and game options).

These demands were contained in a list of new European rules on digital platforms. European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, expressed his satisfaction with Apple’s decision to withdraw from excluding Epic, and saw that “the rules on digital platforms have achieved very tangible results since the second day (of their implementation).
