“The new iPhone 14 line introduces revolutionary new technologies and important security features. We are thrilled to be producing the iPhone 14 in India, ”the company said in a statement Monday, confirming weeks of speculation.
Apple devices are manufactured in India by Taiwanese companies Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron, but the company typically begins assembling models in the country only seven to eight times. months after the launch, Tarun Pathak, director of research at Counterpoint, told CNN Business.
Monday’s announcement marks a major shift in its strategy and comes at a time when U.S. tech companies are looking for alternatives to China, where global supply chains have been disrupted due to severe Covid-related blockages. Concern is also growing over the risk of a greater rift between China and the United States over Taiwan.
Analysts had long predicted that Apple would reduce its dependence on China. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year that the company was looking to increase production in countries including Vietnam and India, citing China’s tough Covid policy as one of the reasons.
“Apple wants to diversify and not put all eggs in one basket,” Pathak said, adding that the move was a “show of faith in India.”
