Apple Pay is finally available at Crédit Agricole, only in stores and in France ?

Finally ! Three and a half years after its launch in France, Apple Pay is finally adopted by Crédit Agricole. You can register your Crédit Agricole bank card (free of charge) in Wallet to pay with your iPhone or Apple Watch in store.

A MasterCard card from Crédit-Agricole Center-Est

For Crédit Agricole customers who are only discovering Apple Pay today, remember that the service works wherever contactless payments are accepted – no need to look for the Apple Pay sticker on store windows. You need at least an iPhone 6 or SE. The maximum amount of payments made with Apple Pay is not limited to € 30, it depends on the ceiling of your card.

To take advantage of Apple Pay in paid by phone or with Apple Watch, open the Wallet app, press the button + at the top right, then point your card with your iPhone so that it reads its numbers (you can also enter them manually). Then enter the expiration date and security code on the back, then accept the terms of use. A confirmation code will be sent to you by SMS to complete the transaction.

This remains to be confirmed the same day when the bank has formalized the news, but it is possible that only payments in France are currently managed, not those made abroad. This could be explained by the only payment network used at this stage, the Franco-French CB network. Societe Generale launched in two stages in 2018: Apple Pay first in France, then five months later abroad and online also thanks to the reinforcement of the VISA network.

LCL, which is part of the Crédit Agricole group, should support Apple Pay in the coming months (see also Apple Pay’s successful bet in France).

Apple Pay only in France and not online at the moment

The full potential of Apple Pay is unfortunately not available right now at Crédit Agricole. Only payments in stores and in France are currently managed, not payments abroad, nor those made online or in apps (impossible to use Crédit Agricole with Apple Pay to pay in the ‘App Store, in particular). This is explained by the only payment network used at this stage, the Franco-French CB network.

This is not a first, Societe Generale also launched in two stages in 2018: Apple Pay first in France, then five months later abroad and online also thanks to the reinforcement of the VISA network. Crédit Agricole will expand its compatibility with Apple Pay in the second half, according to our information.

LCL, which is part of the Crédit Agricole group, is expected to support Apple Pay in the coming months.

Updated at 08:47: added the limit for payments abroad and online.

Update at 11:45: Crédit Agricole has posted its Apple Pay FAQ. The bank specifies in particular that are compatible with Apple Pay “All active Crédit Agricole payment cards, excluding professional cards (which are not eligible for the service) with immediate or deferred debit under the CB brand. “
