Apple’s $ 4.7 billion in green bonds helps generate 1.2 gigawatts of clean energy

In 2020 Apple funded 17 green bond projects that avoid an average of 921,000 tons of CO2e per year. That is equivalent to the annual carbon dioxide emissions of almost 200,000 cars. The projects will generate 1.2 gigawatts of renewable energy worldwide, with Apple already adding over 350 megawatts of additional renewable energy in Nevada, Illinois, Virginia and Denmark last year. Apple’s green bond bonds are among the largest in the private sector.

An overview of Apple’s recent investments in renewable energy
Onsite solar project near Reno, Nevada: A 180 hectare site in the Reno Technology Park is now supplying the Apple data center in Nevada with electricity. The project, which was named “Utility-Scale Project of the Year” by Solar Builder, created 236 clean energy jobs, with more than 90 percent of the workforce being residents of Nevada. The project also represents an investment of over $ 60 million in Washoe County. The site provides 50 megawatts of renewable energy to Apple and complements the company’s three other projects in Nevada, which are totaling 270 megawatts.
Wind farm near Chicago: A virtual power purchase agreement for 112 megawatts with the wind farm in Illinois covers Apple’s electricity consumption in the Chicago area. This project bundles buyers and enables other companies with less purchasing power to access the same high quality renewable energy as Apple.
Solarprojekt in Fredericksburg, Virginia: As part of an innovative agreement, Apple partnered with Etsy, Akamai, and SwissRE to support the development of 165 megawatts of renewable energy through a solar photovoltaic project near Fredericksburg, Virginia, which now powers the large-scale utility grid of the region.
Largest onshore wind turbines in Denmark: Apple has completed the construction of two of the world’s largest onshore wind turbines. This source of clean, renewable energy is now operational. The 200-meter-high plants near the Danish city of Esbjerg are expected to produce 62 gigawatt hours a year – enough to supply almost 20,000 households with electricity. They also serve as testing grounds for powerful offshore wind turbines. The electricity generated in Esbjerg will power Apple’s data center in Viborg, with all excess energy being fed into the Danish electricity grid.
