Apple Car: Bob Mansfield replaced by John Giannandrea

A new report from Bloomberg reveals that Apple has transferred the direction of its autonomous car project to John Giannandrea, its senior vice president of machine learning and AI strategy. According to our American colleagues, “hundreds of engineers” from the Titan project have recently moved into the artificial intelligence and machine learning group.

The Titan project takes a turn

The report explains that Doug Field is leading the Titan project “day to day” and that “his team of hundreds of engineers have joined Giannandrea’s artificial intelligence and machine learning group.” So far, Field has reported to Bob Mansfield.

Mansfield came out of retirement in 2016 to lead the team Project Titan Apple Car. Mansfield previously led Apple’s hardware team before moving to a special projects position where he worked on the Apple Watch before retiring and moving to an advisory role as reported in 2016.

The Bloomberg report states that Mansfield “has now fully retired from Apple” and that the management of Project Titan has now transferred to Giannandrea.

Previously, Field was Bob Mansfield, Apple’s former senior vice president of hardware engineering. Mansfield has now completely retired from Apple, leading Giannandrea to take over.

Apple’s Project Titan has evolved into strategy over the years. For the record, Apple has been working on self-driving car technology since 2014, but development has been hampered by technical and leadership challenges.

The project is currently said to focus on the development of an autonomous driving system, which is why Giannandrea is now given the reins of the project. Bloomberg has more details on the current scope of Project Titan, saying Apple’s plan is to create an autonomous driving system for a partner.

Apple has since excluded some engineers from the project, but continues to develop. In the past, the company has considered launching its own car, building the autonomous driving system for an automotive manufacturing partner, or designing an aftermarket kit that works with several different cars.

We are therefore not necessarily more advanced on the subject. But one thing is certain, Apple has not abandoned its Apple Car.

Recall that in 2017, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that the company was working on autonomous driving software.
