Apple allows alternative payment systems for dating apps in the Netherlands – Tablets and phones – News

Apple has complied with ACM’s requirement in the Netherlands and allows alternative payment methods for dating apps on its App Store. The ACM laid down that requirement on December 24 and gave Apple two months to cooperate.

Had Apple not cooperated with the pronunciation, the company was faced with a penalty of 5 million euros per week, with a maximum of 50 million euros. Apple will still appeal against the claim, but that case has yet to occur; for now the requirement is valid. With an alternative payment system, the apps don’t have to pay the 15 to 30 percent commission to Apple; those other systems also cost money, of course.

The Dutch Authority for Consumers & Markets found that Apple applied ‘unreasonable’ conditions in the App Store, because dating app providers did not have a free choice in payment systems for purchases that consumers make in the apps; they were only allowed to use Apple’s payment systems. In addition, they have to pay $ 99 per year to be in the App Store, says the ACM. This time, ACM focused on dating apps because, in their opinion, that is where the most trouble is experienced and most complaints come from.

Apple makes the decision announced on a support page. There, it underlined that it believes these changes “could damage the user experience and create new threats to privacy and security.” It also reminds developers that the parties behind the apps with their own payment system are responsible for processes around refunds, purchase history, subscription management and other customer service issues.

It is not the first time that Apple has tacked on in this area. In South Korea it will also allow alternative payment systems within iOS. Also Germany, India in Russia look at Apple’s monopoly on payments within its ecosystem.
