Apollo 15 astronaut Al Worden dies at 88

To wordenastronaut who in the mission of Apollo 15 turned the Moon while his companions were driving a cart across the lunar surface, he passed away, friends reported Wednesday. He was 88 years old.

His family reported that Worden passed away when he slept in Houston. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Al was a national hero whose exploits in space and on Earth will never be forgottenNASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a statement.

He also praised Worden for his appearances in the children show Mister Rogers ’Neighborhood in which he explained to the boys aspects of space travels.

Worden flew to the Moon in 1971 along with David Scott Y Jim Irwin. He stayed in the Endeavor module circling the Moon as Scott and Irwin came down to the surface and tested the first lunar cart.

Once his classmates returned to the module, Worden starred in the first spacewalk deep, almost 322 thousand kilometers (200 thousand miles) from Earth. He inspected the scientific instrument booth of the module and removed rolls of film. It was floating through space just 38 minutes.

Scott is now one of the four people Remaining who set foot on the Moon. Irwin passed away in 1991.
