Anthony Moris: “Every Union player has the same story. We were in deep shit and we had to roll up our sleeves to get out of it” – Foot national

Anonymous at Excelsior Virton, they are now leading the Belgian championship with the Union. Meeting with the trio Anthony Moris, Loïc Lapoussin and Guillaume François who looks back on this incredible evolution.

Players who opt for the Union often justify their choice by the charm of the stadium and the glorious past of the club. Is that also what inspired you to join Duden Park?

LAPOUSSIN : “I had heard that Union was a mythical club, but I didn’t know more. Now that I’m there, I see that the similarities with Red Star are striking. It’s more fun to play for a club with a history than for a normal club.”

MORIS : “I knew what the Union represented and I wanted to be the goalkeeper who would bring it back to D1A 48 years later. There is also a link with my national team since the president of the Luxembourg federation, Paul Philip, was the last Union scorer in D1 before this season. It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”

Apart from a few players, the Union is made up of guys who had never played in D1. Is that why this group is so hungry?

FRANÇOIS : “At the start of the season, I read a lot about us. Union were a bird for the cat, the group was not experienced enough. See where they are today Teddy Teuma, Deniz Undav and Christian Burgess. They had never played in D1, but they are the backbone of the team. They play as if they were the bosses of the D1. They have so much maturity that it looks like they have 150 matches at the highest level in their legs.”

LAPOUSSIN : “In football, everything goes very quickly. Many players from the Union had the intrinsic qualities to play in D1, but they had never received their chance.”

You are part of it, Loïc. Two years ago you were an anonymous Virton player and now you are the star of Madagascar.

MORIS : “Madagascar? That doesn’t count” ( He’s laughing).

LAPOUSSIN : “I know where I come from. People have had it hard, but so have I. I’ve worked to get this far and it helps keep my feet on the ground.”

MORIS : “Every Union player has the same story. We don’t have a nice linear journey behind us. We were in deep shit and we had to roll up our sleeves to get out of it. That’s why we appreciates more than anyone what is happening to us now. We are in the lead, but we also know that the fall can be hard.”
