What can you expect today?

The member referendum at PvdA and GroenLinks on a joint list and election program closes at 12:00. The results will be announced later in the afternoon. The two parties want to enter the elections together and are asking for the support of the members. In Vijfhuizen, the victims of the MH17 disaster are commemorated. The big commemoration will take place again next year; in 2020 it has been decided that the disaster will be commemorated every five years. Outgoing Prime Minister Rutte and his EU colleagues are in Brussels for a meeting with the leaders of more than thirty Latin American and Caribbean countries, including Suriname. They want to strengthen ties. The grain deal between Ukraine and Russia for export across the Black Sea is about to expire. What did you miss?

The bridge between Russia’s Krasnodar region and the annexed Crimean peninsula was unexpectedly closed to all traffic last night. The Russian-appointed governor of Crimea said only that there was an emergency, but gave no further details as to why the bridge was closing.

Ukrainian media report that explosions were heard on the bridge. That has not yet been independently confirmed. A Russian Telegram channel with ties to the Wagner group says the bridge was hit twice in 15 minutes. The governor of Belgorod said two people were killed.

The bridge was severely damaged by a major explosion in October last year. Part of the roadway and the track over it were knocked away. The Crimean Bridge is currently of great strategic importance to Russia, which uses the connection across the Strait of Kerch, among other things, to supply Russian troops in Crimea.
