She had been given the jewelry by her father before he passed away in 2008.

sport">Ria was there when Annemiek became world champion on the road in 2019. Neither at the Tokyo Games nor in Rio 2016 when her daughter seemed on her way to Olympic gold, but fell. “Then she said, ‘Well Mom, those earrings didn’t bring luck.’ “Certainly,” I replied. We feared the worst when we saw you lying there still, but you’re still alive. And ever since then she always has those earrings in during special competitions.”
