Anne-Sophie Mutter and the New York Philharmonic in the Turbinenhalle Peenemünde

Concert (Germany 2022, first broadcast) On May 21, Anne-Sophie Mutter and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under chief conductor Jaap van Zweden gave a concert at the Peenemünde power station as part of the Usedom Music Festival. It is a special place: the Nazi regime had the rockets developed there that were used to bombard London in World War II. Today the former turbine hall is a place of remembrance and reconciliation.

“I’ve followed with great respect over the years how the Usedom Music Festival has repeatedly succeeded in making political statements with its musical program,” says Anne-Sophie Mutter. “Signs that stand for peace, reconciliation and international understanding”.

At the moment this seems more necessary than ever: the New York Philharmonic sees itself as a “peace ambassador”. In view of the war and deaths in Ukraine, chief conductor van Zweden says: “The only solution is to stop and listen to each other – and listen to music, because music can heal many wounds.”

The music of two composers who had to flee from the Nazi regime was played in the turbine hall: Béla Bartók and André Previn. One of the most versatile and successful composers, conductors and pianists of the 20th century, Previn was married to Mutter from 2002 to 2006. He wrote his violin concerto “Anne-Sophie” for her. “In 1939 the family emigrated to the USA and settled in Los Angeles,” says the violinist. “Nevertheless, Germany remained home for André Previn all his life – a homeland that he loved despite everything. I think it would have made him very happy if he could have heard his violin concerto in the former turbine hall of the Peenemünde power plant. Because he too was – just like me – convinced of the reconciling power of music.”

Béla Bartók composed his “Concerto for Orchestra” in 1943 in the United States, marked by illness and under difficult economic conditions. Nevertheless, it is one of his catchiest and most successful works.
