entertainment">“I have no memories of: oh how hard it was,” says Anna about the period in which she stayed in asylum seekers’ centers as an Iranian refugee. “I think it has left its mark, but as a child it kind of passes you by.” In the third episode of the four-part docuseries, Anna and her mother visit the thirteen Dutch asylum seekers’ centers where they stayed.

entertainment">Once they arrived in Aalsmeer, where she and her family lived when they had received a residence permit, Anna and her sister often had to manage alone at home. Anna was eleven years old at the time. “My sister and I were on our own. We took care of each other, but not out of love or anything, we were just fellow sufferers.”

Privilege

entertainment">About her father, the YouTuber tells in the newspaper that he drank and never hit her, but her sister and mother did. “I had a privilege that I didn’t want.” The influencer tries to understand her father instead of being mad at him. “In Iran he was one with his environment. He was a judge, he had status.” According to Anna, the Dutch thought he was “stupid”, “because he took a little longer to compose a sentence.”

entertainment">As a result of her childhood, Anna struggles with anxiety attacks and sometimes panic attacks, she further explains. “If I don’t feel comfortable in a group, I start to have bad breath, and if that goes on for too long, I have that panic attack.” She is also sometimes absent, then she is there ‘physically’, but not with her head, writes NRC† The director of the series, Niki Padidar, sent her to a psychiatrist. “I had to talk to my mother and sister about what had happened to us.”

entertainment">Anna describes the documentary as “total therapy.” “I understand that the outside world thinks: why in God’s name with cameras? It was mainly because I had promised Niki to cooperate fully, I wanted to keep that. And I trusted her completely. That forced me to figure out things that I was putting off all those years before.”
