Berlin. The Berliner Symphoniker gave a very special concert on Thursday. To be more precise: in front of a very special audience. For their concert “OverTiere” they moved to the Hippopotamus House at Zoo Berlin and played “animal” works, such as “Bumblebee Flight” by Nikolai Rimski-Korsakow and Joseph Haydn’s symphony “The Bear”.
“It was just fantastic to play here in the Hippopotamus House,” said violinist Philippe Perotto of the “rbb Abendschau” and added: “Sure, when you come in, it smells first, but after ten minutes you get used to it. Then it is to forget.”
Because of Corona, there has been no audience for a long time
The concert has a very serious background. Both the musicians and the animals have had to go without visitors for months because of the corona pandemic. In the zoo, only the outdoor areas are open to visitors with a negative corona test. With the extraordinary concert, the zoo and the Berlin Symphony Orchestra attract attention. Donations are also collected. You have something in common and now help each other, said Sabine Völker, director of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. It is a great experience.
Hippo bull Ede and his conspecifics Nicole, Kathie and Nala were, according to Maximilian Jäger, press spokesman for Zoo Berlin, very relaxed in view of the musical performance. The stream of the concert by the Berliner Symphoniker can be seen online from May 9th, 4 p.m.
