Angelina Jolie quits her job at the United Nations after twenty years

After more than twenty years, Angelina Jolie leaves the position of ambassador of the UNHCR, the United Nations agency for refugees. The American actress will continue to work for refugees, she announced via Instagram.

“I believe in many things the United Nations does, especially in lives saved through emergency aid. UNHCR is full of extraordinary people who make a difference in the lives of others every day. Refugees are the people I admire most in the world and I am committed to working with them for the rest of my life,” writes 47-year-old Jolie, without going into detail about the organizations she intends to work with.

Jolie became a UN ambassador in 2001 and was “promoted” in 2012 when she became special envoy. That is why she made regular trips to refugee camps and conflict zones. In total she has carried out more than sixty field missions. You recently visited Ukraine, Yemen and Burkina Faso, among others.

The UNHCR is grateful for all the work the actress has done. UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi said in a statement that he “made a difference” for those displaced. “After a long and successful run, I support your desire to shift her involvement. I know the refugee cause will remain close to her heart and I am sure she will bring that same passion and focus to a wider humanitarian portfolio.”
