Markus Anfang and his assistant coach Florian Junge have resigned with immediate effect. This is announced by Werder Bremen on its website.
“The reason for the decision is the prosecutors’ investigation regarding the two coaches, as well as subsequent unrest around the club,” the club writes.
According to the credible journalist Fabrizio Romano, the investigation concerns that the coaching duo is suspected of having used falsified evidence of vaccination against covid-19.
– Due to the extreme stress that this has caused the club, the team, my family and myself, I have chosen to immediately step down from my role as head coach of Werder Bremen, says Anfang in the press release.
He says that he asked to have his contract broken, which the club then agreed to do.
– Through this, Markus and Florian have taken responsibility and are trying to stop the unrest that has existed around the club in recent days. We respect their decision and will now start our search for a new head coach, says the club’s sports director Frank Baumann.
Werder Bremen will tonight play a match against FC Shalke 04. It is then assistant coach Daniel Zenkovic who takes over the main responsibility. With him, he will have U19 coach Christian Brand as assistant.
