Andromeda OS. The mobile system that Microsoft has ditched

Though the system never came to light in the end, Windows Central acquired an early test version of Andromeda running on Lumia 950 phones. According to the service, Microsoft was very close to introducing a more modern successor to Windows Phone.

Project assumptions

The Andromeda OS itself was not supposed to be dedicated to Lumia, although it was Microsoft that was used to develop the project. The canceled version of the system was created with the dual-screen Surface Duo in mind. Although there were rumors about the project in 2018, it is now known that it was already postponed to the distant future. Ultimately, however, the company never returned to it.

The system that Windows Central has reached is therefore an incomplete version, full of bugs and problems. The user interface itself was not finished either, but it gives at least a minimal idea of how it was supposed to look and in what direction the company planned to develop it.

A lot of space in Andromeda has been devoted to the possibility of quick listing. The system user could take notes manually, using the stylus, already on the home screen before unlocking the phone. After unlocking the device, the Journal (later known as Microsoft Whiteboard) was supposed to open, allowing for more detailed notes using sticky notes, images, 3D objects and other amenities.

Broken dreams

While Andromeda OS is not officially released, it may be fortunate that Microsoft has abandoned the project. The shown version of the system is very underdeveloped and would require considerable expenditure to be completed. It is known that Andromeda was delayed, not only in terms of the schedule itself, but probably also in terms of the market situation.

Soon after burying the project, more modern solutions with an interesting design began to appear on the market. Microsoft itself spent a lot of time redesigning its Windows dedicated to desktops. Andromeda would have to undergo a significant metamorphosis almost immediately after its release, which might not be best received by smartphone users. Many people might think that the company released an underdeveloped system, and this would have a strong impact on Microsoft’s image.
