Andris Vecumnieks: Symphony E and the Importance of Latvian Music in Musical Culture

In his work so far, the composer has not numbered the genres of the symphony, but rather created a synthesis between the sequential number and the musical order, thus the fifth symphony is written in Mima major and, taking into account that in music mi is denoted by the letter E, it was given the name Symphony E.

“As Sinfonia C, also Symphony E was created at the initiative of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra, and this time it was conceived as a future self-dedication of my sixtieth birthday,” says Vecumnieks. “The thematic concept of the sea and Kurzeme in the context of the parallel view of world music masterpieces and the teeth marks the importance and place of Latvian music in musical culture. Before it, the organically fitting version of Jāzeps Vītolas’s song “Vilņu” will be played, with the instrumentation of Gaita Jānis Pujāts.

In the second part of the concert, Charles Ives A question without an answer will just as organically merge and continue with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto in Solmajor with soloist Reina Zariņa at the piano.

“A question will be asked, but will we get an answer?” Vecumnieks tells about the concert program, referring to the words of the composer Jura Karlsons that “the task of art is to ask questions, not to give answers”, therefore the search for answers is up to each listener.

Andris Vecumnieks is a lecturer at the Departments of Composition, Orchestral Conducting and Musicology at JVLMA, a visiting professor at the Latvian Academy of Culture and Daugavpils University, regularly teaches master classes in Latvia and abroad.

As a conductor, he has given more than 400 concerts in Latvia and abroad, including Lithuania, Estonia, Germany, Sweden, Slovakia, Luxembourg, Georgia, Azerbaijan and elsewhere. The composer has established regular cooperation with the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra and the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra.

Vecumnieks is a self-founded orchestra Sinfonia Concertante artistic director, long-time conductor of the symphony orchestra of the Emīlas Dārziņas Music High School, from 2004 to 2018 he was the class and artistic director of the JVLMA Symphony Orchestra.
