Andrew Cuomo: “Please come and help us in New York now”

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo has made an appeal to available nurses across the country amid the rapidly increasing number of corona cases in New York. “Please come and help us in New York now,” said Cuomo. “We need relief.”

In the state of New York alone, more than 1200 people have died of Covid-19 so far, and more than 66,000 people are also infected with the corona virus. Most recently, more than 200 people had died within one day in the state alone.

Cuomo described the extent of the virus-related deaths as “harrowing”. About the sometimes tense relationship with US President Donald Trump, Cuomo said that it was now a matter of fighting the virus together. Trump had meanwhile announced that he wanted to cordon off the state and thus offended Cuomo.

Cuomo now said it was not the time for political power games. He will not have an exchange of blows with Trump, said Cuomo. “Forget about politics! We are in a national crisis, there is no politics now!” Cuomo is a Democrat, US President Donald Trump a Republican.

In the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, the US Navy’s hospital ship “USNS Comfort” had already arrived in New York. The 272-meter-long floating hospital with 1,000 beds and twelve operating theaters is designed to relieve the New York clinics. No coronavirus patients are treated on the ship. Other patients can be transferred to the ship to give the hospitals more capacity for coronavirus patients.

Trump had previously said he expected the death toll in the US corona crisis could peak in two weeks. According to the Johns Hopkins University, there are currently more than 148,000 confirmed infections with the novel coronavirus in the USA, more than in any other country in the world. Trump is therefore extending the guidelines on social distancing, which were originally valid until March 30, until April 30.
