Andreas Almgren broke a 42-year-old athletics record

On Thursday night, 26-year-old Andreas Almgren ran 3,000 meters in 7.41.72 in Lahti. Thus, he broke Dan Glan’s 42-year-old record in the distance by just over half a second, the Swedish Athletics Association writes on Twitter.

– I have had a pretty tough spring after knee surgery so it is wonderful to get a receipt that everything is going in the right direction. I have done some training sessions that showed that the form was good so I felt it, says Almgren to SVT.

To set Swedish records at the distance is a bit of Almgren’s specialty, but he has not always been lucky.

In January this year, he hit 7.41.60, which from time to time was an improvement on his own Swedish record in the distance indoors. However, as the electronic timing did not work at the time, manual timing was used, which meant that the result was not counted as an official record.

Now, however, we must assume that electronic timekeeping was used in Lahti.
