And how far are we now?

There will be scientists who will say that in the research on the SARS-CoV-2 virus we are already terribly far, but there will also be others who will step on the Covid19 brake and think we should say that we actually still know very little. I must honestly admit that a lot is already known, but that we still know far too little.

Recently my wife said that on the local boulevard quite a few guests from abroad – especially Germans – were walking, keeping no distance, wearing mouth masks and pretending that nothing was wrong, as if no Coronavirus ever existed .
Now I immediately thought of the first statement by a senior gentleman of the RIVM, that everything would be better than that, after which he came up with the cry of ‘group immunity’.

Immunity and contamination
On the site Scientias.nl you can find out all about it SARS-CoV-2 virus and it was recently stated that we humans have a certain type of white blood cell in our blood, the so-called T cell, which specializes in recognizing cells infected with virus, including Covid19. These T cells are said to be part of the cleaning service of the body, which clears up an infection – including a virus infection. Now there seems to have been a study in Sweden that people found fewer antibodies – so the normal test as we can have done in the Teststraat – but that more people are infected when looking at the T cell response (reaction of the cleaning service). In other words, the antibody test would show less positive people.
At the same time, it was discovered through the same study in Sweden that multiple blood donors were found to be positive with T-specific cells for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. So in that case we should actually adjust the test for blood donors and allow fewer people to donate blood.

Should this mean that Sanquin – the Blood Bank – should do more research on blood donors, with or without antibodies? The question now is whether this is already happening; I must honestly admit that I have not heard it yet, but that is not to say everything.
In the time of my training as a medical analyst, I also did this work at the Blood Bank in Tilburg, but then still real handwork; later at the RIVM and the Streeklab, a bit more was automatically done in the field of blood tests for donors and pregnant women. But with the current techniques, all this should be able to happen completely automatically and within a second one could have the results of the blood, with which results in the field of HIV and SARS-CoV-2 virus become famous.

On the other hand, the NRC released a mid-July report items “Defense against Corona quickly disappears from the blood” and that is a less positive message. The article indicates that “… antibodies against the new Coronavirus disappear from the blood after only a few months …” According to the journalist, this would raise questions about the feasibility of group immunity and the effect of vaccines.
Nowadays, the slogan ‘group immunity’ has been questioned from the start, since this could never be realized with the rules and laws that were presented to us by the government on the advice of the OMT.
According to experts – and especially from abroad – group immunity is only achieved if two thirds of the population have built up antibodies against the virus. Those people would then no longer be susceptible to another attack from it SARS-CoV-2 virus, which should put an end to the epidemic. In other words, if one gains immunity to the virus within a few months, building group immunity against the virus is not feasible. And this is reinforced by the use of mouth masks. Advice: forget the slogan ‘group immunity’ in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 virus now immediately.

The investigation mentioned in the NRC was about a British investigation, however Scientias.nl brought it about the same 10 days later items about an investigation in the US where the same was stated. The study showed that the antibodies decreased rapidly in the first period after the infection, so that the level halved within 36 days. The researchers concluded that the antibodies would disappear within a year.

Second Gulf
It has already been indicated before that a variant of the virus is in circulation, with one being somewhat stronger than the other. The question is then again strongly present what the research on the T cell response is like. Perhaps an answer will be found about that.
In May, the AD already indicated in an article that the virus would never disappear, but yes, that was already known, but now it appears that the virus is still fully present in the world and therefore also spread. Spreading in particular should be important to know how an infection can move from one to another.

But what about another attack wave of the virus? It seems that the second wave has already started – much earlier than we expected – but how are we going to survive this, if there are variants in the virus, if the immunity is not working long enough and therefore vaccines seem to become less reliable .

It is important to be clear to the population, clarity that must come from the scientists and the people who deal with it on a daily basis, such as care providers, virologists, IC staff, but especially care outside the hospitals and of course the members of the OMT, the government’s advisory body.
Dare to be honest and say that we all ‘don’t know a thing or two about the virus and the attack waves of it SARS-CoV-2 virusdespite the science and expensive equipment. Now tell the people honestly that this virus is similar to other viruses, but not that we don’t know whether good immunity can develop, that a vaccine can work if not enough immunity is built up, that there are several variants floating around, which may give a different reaction, and there may be other things we still don’t know the answer to. This is called providing clarity, but it is also called honesty.
The fact that everyone is working hard on the vaccine, without doing research on the virus and on immunity and on the antibody level, can never yield good results.
