In the note, the bloc reveals that “it has approved a fifth contract with the pharmaceutical company CureVac, which provides for the initial purchase of 225 million doses on behalf of all EU Member States, in addition to an additional option of an additional 180 million doses, as soon as the vaccine proves to be safe and effective against Covid-19 ‘.
“Today’s contract expands the already broad portfolio of vaccines to be produced in Europe, including the contracts signed with AstraZeneca, Sanofi, Janssen and BioNtech-Pfizer, and the successful exploratory negotiations with Moderna”, adds the organization.
Thus, explains Brussels, this “diverse” set of vaccines will “ensure that Europe is well prepared for vaccination, when vaccines are shown to be safe and effective. Member States can also decide to donate the vaccine to the poorest countries or to forward it to other European countries ”.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has also released the news through her Twitter account. «Today we approved a new contract to buy doses of a future vaccine produced by CureVac. This is the fifth contract. So far, we have guaranteed 1.2 billion doses of potential vaccines. We are committed to ensuring access to safe, effective and affordable vaccines, ”he wrote.

The official says that the Commission “fulfills its commitment to guarantee equitable access to safe, effective and affordable vaccines, not only for EU citizens, but also for the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world”.
“Most of these vaccine candidates are in an advanced phase of clinical testing, we hope that authorization will confirm these positive results that will help us overcome the pandemic,” he added.
