Ancelotti, Zidane, Capello, Del Bosque … On his bench, Real Madrid likes to do something new with old

The rumors, in recent hours, have turned into an official announcement Tuesday, June 1: Carlo Ancelotti is the new coach of Real Madrid. The Italian returns to the Spanish capital six years after the end of his first stint. This is not the first time that the club of President Florentino Pérez has recalled one of its former coaches. Vicente del Bosque, Fabio Capello and more recently Zinédine Zidane have proven that Real are recycling to make any anti-waste activist pale.

Back on the four coaches who have carried out several mandates at the head of the Merengues in the modern era.

Vicente del Bosque

He is in a way the precursor of the coaches to several passages in the Iberian capital. But, unlike the other three, Del Bosque will only experience one stint in the long run. He had his first experience at the end of the 1993/1994 season, taking over from Benito Floro. The Spaniard comes eleven days from the end in La Liga and Real are in 3rd position. At the end of this exercise, Vicente del Bosque is dismissed. The fault at the end of the championship concluded with three defeats in the last four meetings and resulting in a disappointing fourth place final. The former defensive midfielder You meringues in the late 1970s was not helped by the elimination of his team against PSG in the quarter-finals of the Coupe des coupes (C2), although Del Bosque was not yet in place in the first leg (2-1 overall).

The native of Salamanca takes the reins briefly, to put it mildly, in 1996 for … only one interim match after the dismissal of Jorge Valdano. He thus succeeds the one who had replaced him two years earlier. Del Bosque beats Athletic Bilbao easily (5-0) but then has to give up his place. He will find it permanently in 1999 when Real Madrid finally offers him full powers. For four years, Vicente del Bosque directed the Galacticos Luis Figo, Zinédine Zidane then Ronaldo. Above all, he filled the trophy cabinet with two Spanish championships (2001 and 2003) and above all two Champions Leagues (2000 and 2002), the last of which before a long time. It will ultimately not be extended after four full seasons.

Fabio Capello

Now 74 years old, the Italian technician is truly the first to have completed two terms on the bench for Real. But these will have lasted only a year each. The first began in 1996 when Fabio Capello unloaded the full suitcases from AC Milan. His home, Don Fabio won everything: four Serie A and a C1. It is then a great name which must lead the Madrilenians to the top. Engaged only in La Liga, Mr. Capello has no other choice but to win it. He will do so brilliantly, beating the Barcelona rival by just two units. At the end of the season, the transalpine decides to return to AC Milan after just one year.

Nine years later, in 2006, Fabio Capello returned to the White House as the campaign pledge of newly elected President Ramón Calderón. The start is complicated, especially with the supporters who criticize him for his tactical approach that is too defensive for their taste. They also criticize his choice to do without Ronaldo and Beckham on several occasions. Real Madrid are crowned champions of Spain on the final day, on goal difference, in the face and beard of FC Barcelona. But the coach’s adventure will end here, sacked by the president at the origin of his arrival.

Zinedine Zidane

The Frenchman is at home in Madrid. Former player (2001-2006), assistant to Carlo Ancelotti (2013-2014) then coach of Castilla (2014-2016), the reserve team, he really takes the lead by being propelled on the bench of the first team. Zidane moved in January 2016 to replace a Rafa Benitez stuck in the crisis. Zizou’s first half-season is not far from exceptional as he finishes second in La Liga just one point behind Barça and above all wins the Champions League. It is also in this competition that ZZ will mark his first visit to Madrid. He won the next two C1s, to which we must add a Liga, to achieve a historic treble that had not been achieved since Bayern Munich in 1974, 1975 and 1976. Somewhat tired, on the roof of Europe, Zinedine Zidane gives up his last year of contract for a “need for change”.

It will take nine months to see the native of Marseille plunge back into the deep end, in March 2019. The world champion loves his club too much to resist the call. The season is too badly started to hope for anything. Rather, it is the next exercise that Zidane puts his paw on the group. When the 2019-2020 season is suddenly interrupted because of the Covid-19, Real are in second position behind Barça. The post-Covid recovery is fantastic: no defeats in the last eleven games. Real win La Liga, Zidane’s second. But the 48-year-old technician will not be able to extend the state of grace during this 2020-2021 season: the You meringues take the door in the semifinals of the C1 and finish on the heels of Atlético de Madrid in the league. Annoyed by the lack of “trust” and of “support” he believes he deserves from Madrid leaders, he is leaving his post a year before the end of his lease.

Carlo Ancelotti

He is therefore the latest coach to return to Real. In the heart of Madridistas, Carlo Ancelotti holds a special place since he will forever remain the coach of the Tenth. He concluded the first of his two seasons (2013-2014) with the tenth coronation in the Champions League that the partners were waiting after a twelve-year long scarcity.

He failed the following year in the semi-finals of the Champions League (against Juventus, 3-2 in aggregate) and two small units from Barcelona in La Liga. Back on Tuesday June 1 at the White House, six years after his departure, it will be one of the major challenges for the Mister who has never won the Spanish championship.
