Analysis: PDIP Cadres Leave to Support Prabowo-Gibran: Why are They Leaving and What it Means for Upcoming Elections

Jakarta

Lecturer in Political Science and International Studies, Paramadina University, Ahmad Khoirul Umam, analyzes the reasons why many politicians leave PDIP to support candidate pair number 2, Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming. Umam believes that this is a domino effect from the PDIP’s decision to deal with the current government.

“This indicates the increasing collapse of PDIP power cells, as a domino effect of PDIP’s political attitude which now chooses to face power,” said Umam when contacted, Saturday (27/1/2024).

Umam said that the resignation of Budiman Sudjatmiko, Maruarar Sirait, and most recently Stefanus Gusma, could be interpreted as practical politics ahead of the 2024 presidential election. He said it was also part of the natural selection of PDIP cadres.

“Indeed, this can be interpreted as a natural selection process in the PDIP’s internal cadre formation scheme, where the practical political dynamics ahead of the current very pragmatic presidential election will select the level of loyalty and militancy of PDIP cadres,” he said.

Even so, Umam believes that the resignation of these politicians from PDIP is not just a factor of pragmatism and opportunism. He assessed that they experienced dissatisfaction with PDIP.

“However, the step back from several key PDIP cadres was not solely influenced by pragmatism and opportunism, but also seemed to be triggered by the dissatisfaction of a number of these cadres who felt that their space for self-actualization was limited,” he said.

For this reason, according to him, PDIP must immediately anticipate this. “PDIP must anticipate this condition, quickly consolidating its power cells so that there is no further domino effect from the trend of the resignation of their main cadres ahead of the legislative and presidential elections in the next 3 weeks,” he added.

Gusma says goodbye from PDIP

Previously, the General Chair of Catholic Youth (PK) Stefanus Gusma followed in Maruarar Sirait’s footsteps in leaving PDIP. Gusma also resigned from the PDIP Badiklatpus management.

“Yes, I have said goodbye. I have apologized, expressed my thanks and said goodbye to my seniors in the party. I sent a WA text, and I also wrote a resignation letter as a Badiklatpus administrator.” said Gusma in his statement, Saturday (27/1).

Gusma, who is also the former chairman of the KNPI DPP, said that he is currently actively assisting the volunteer community to win the Prabowo-Gibran presidential candidate pair. He initiated and fostered the Youth Solidarity community for Indonesian Diversity and Tolerance (Sakti).

Meanwhile, recently, Gusma has also often appeared to accompany Gibran during campaign visits to various places. For example, during a visit to NTT, then during the kick off event for the door to door movement of 2 million SAKTI houses as a step to attract votes to win the Prabowo and Gibran candidate pairs, in Solo City, last Thursday (11/1).

Gusma then explained the reasons for leaving PDIP. He admitted that he had different views with the party regarding the 2024 presidential election.

“I’m considering saying goodbye because I’m different from the party regarding the 2024 presidential election. I think that’s logical and ethical. When I was still a student activist in Solo, I was a volunteer for Pak Jokowi when he was running for mayor, then joined in the struggle when he was running for governor of DKI, and when he was running for president. “twice. I was also Mas Gibran’s door to door coordinator when he ran for mayor of Solo,” explained Gusma.
