Anak Krakatau is on standby, BMKG Asks the Community to Be Wary of Tsunamis at Night

Status Mount Anak Krakatoa increased from level II or alert to level III or alert. Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Council (BMKG) asking the public to be aware of the potential tsunami.

“With the increasing activity level of Mount Anak Krakatau from level II to level III, the public is asked to be aware of the potential for high waves or tsunamis, especially at night according to the information provided by the BMKG,” said BMKG Head Dwikorita in a virtual press conference on the YouTube Info account. BMKG, Monday (25/4/2022).

Dwikorita reminded that the activity of Mount Anak Krakatau had caused a tsunami. Therefore, he ensured that his party together with PVMBG, the Geological Agency, and the local BPBD would monitor the condition of sea water waves around Mount Anak Krakatau.

“To anticipate the potential for a tsunami to occur due to the activities of Mount Anak Krakatau, the BMKG together with the PVMBG-Geological Agency under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources continue to monitor the development of Mount Anak Krakatau and sea level in the Sunda Strait,” he said.

Furthermore, Dwikorita explained why people were asked to be more aware of the potential for a tsunami at night. Because, he said, the increase in sea waves is more difficult to see at night.

“Because at night it is difficult to visually see the presence of high waves approaching the beach. During the day, it is quite visible. This means that activities can still continue,” he said.

“So I repeat, with the increasing level of Mount Anak Krakatau from level II to level III, which was conveyed by PVMBG, the Geological Agency, the public is asked to be aware of the potential for high waves or tsunamis, especially at night when we cannot see various possibilities, and of course Be vigilant according to the information submitted by the BMKG,” he continued.
