Ana María Serrano Céspedes: Seeking Justice for a Femicide in Mexico

On September 12, Ana María Serrano Céspedes, a young 18-year-old student, was a victim of femicide within her own home in the municipality of Atizapán de Zaragoza, State of Mexico. The main suspect points to Alan ‘N’, her ex-boyfriend, who has already been detained by the authorities to begin the corresponding investigations.

Ana María’s family has asked the authorities that this feminicide not go unpunished and that justice be done. This is what is known about the case.

Ana María, victim of femicide in the State of Mexico

Through a video shared on social networks, María Ximena Céspedes, Ana’s mother and president of the Internal Communication Committee of the Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex), pointed out that her daughter became a victim of femicide on September 12 , allegedly at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, Alan ‘N’.

Ana María, or “Nana”, as her family affectionately called her, was 18 years old and had just entered medicine to fulfill her dream of being a cardiologist and had a life ahead of her. In the words of her mother, she “was a girl, in every sense of the word, wonderful. She touched every heart she came across.”

The young woman’s mother explained that on the day the events occurred, she tried to communicate with her daughter, but she did not respond. Later, Ana María sent him a text message that she described as “strange,” so she suspected something was wrong. She resorted to communicating with a neighbor of hers and it was he who found her lifeless, Ximena Céspedes told the Colombian magazine Semana.

She told the media that Ana María and Alan ‘N’ had been separated for two months, during which time he began to harass her in order to get them to return, insistently sending her gifts and messages. Likewise, he mentioned that her daughter had no enemies, so the only suspect was her ex-boyfriend, since before the events there was already a threat.

“They have been in a relationship for a year and a half, they had already broken up since June. He called her a lot, sent her a lot of messages. He harassed her a lot, begging her to come back. It seems that starting Sunday he began to threaten her,” he said.

They ask for ‘Justice for Ana María’

Presumably, on the day of the events, Alan ‘N’ would have found out that Ana María was alone in her house and decided to go visit her. This was the last time the young woman was seen alive. Additionally, the young man is accused of modifying the crime scene in order to make the death look like a suicide.

Until now, it is not known with certainty how the events occurred or the cause of Ana’s death. However, Alan ‘N’ has already been arrested as a probable person responsible for the feminicide of Ana María, reported the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Mexico.

After his arrest, he was transferred to the “Licenciado Juan Fernández Albarrán” Penitentiary and Social Reintegration Center, in San Pedro Barrientos, located in the municipality of Tlalnepantla de Baz, where a judge will determine his legal situation.

“Although the ex-boyfriend is detained, still in the preliminary stages of the process, he not only took my daughter away from us, but also our freedom and tranquility. We cannot return to our house and those of us who were close that day fear for our integrity,” said Ximena Céspedes, who seeks to make the case known to prevent it from going unpunished.

According to information from El Universal, the initial hearing against Alan ‘N’ will take place today. Criminal charges are expected to be brought for the feminicide of Ana María.

“Ana María now rests in peace, but all of us who knew her will not do so until justice is done. “That the fact does not go unpunished and that femicides end in Mexico,” her mother concluded in a message through social networks.
