An extraordinary ECOWAS summit planned for New York

On the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, an extraordinary summit of the Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will be held to discuss, inter alia, the political situation in Guinea and Mali, but also the story of the Ivorian soldiers detained in Mali.

The United Nations General Assembly opens on September 13, 2022 at the United Nations headquarters in New York. For this 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which will bring together the diplomatic community of the United Nations, as well as heads of state and government from around the world, the West African Community of States (ECOWAS) has scheduled an extraordinary summit.

According to information reported by the AFP, which cites a source close to the Ivorian presidency, this extraordinary ECOWAS summit should discuss the case of the Ivorian soldiers detained in Mali. But also the political situation in Guinea and Mali, two countries led by the army, will be at the rendezvous of this extraordinary summit of West African leaders.

After two years of disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the United Nations General Assembly will open on 13 September. A new session means a new President of the General Assembly. The current president, Abdulla Shahid of the Maldives, will step down and Csaba Kőrösi of Hungary will take over for the next twelve months. The award ceremony will take place on Monday 12 September; Mr. Shahid will close the 76th session of the General Assembly in the morning and the first plenary of the 77th session will take place on Tuesday afternoon.
