An employee at St. Olav’s hospital in Trondheim has been diagnosed with covid-19, something the hospital learned on Tuesday morning.

– The person in question has been at work and in contact with patients, says Christina Yvonne Kalland, communications consultant at St. Olav.

Four inpatients and a total of 18 employees have been quarantined, including the employee with proven coronary heart disease.

It is unclear where the employee was infected.

First tested negative

The employee who has been diagnosed with coronary heart disease was tested when he returned home last week, the hospital states in a press release.

The first test was negative, and the employee was thus allowed to start work. After five days, a new test was routinely taken, and the hospital states that the test was then positive for covid-19.

– The fact that you first get a negative test, and then get a positive test, has to do with the fact that in the beginning when you are infected you do not secrete as much virus. Then you can get a negative test. When it takes longer from being infected, you can start to excrete more viruses and get a positive test, says acting director Hilde Pleym at St. Olav’s hospital to NRK.

Employees in quarantine are further tested

– In this special case, we have been tracking infections after we have found a positive employee, Pleym states.

The employee has been in contact with four inpatients. These are in quarantine at the hospital. One patient has been discharged, and is being followed up further by Trondheim municipality.

All 18 employees at the hospital with whom they have had contact are now in quarantine at home. These employees are tested on days 3 and 7, says Pleym.

This means that the employees can return to work after 7 days, if both tests are negative, the hospital explains.

Will not say department

The hospital will not say which position the person has or which department the person works at.

Pleym explains that it is challenging when more employees are quarantined, but that the operation of the hospital is going as planned. There is no reason to believe that the infection is more widespread, and it is safe to come to St. Olav’s hospital, the director believes.
