an astronaut loses his mirror in Space

NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy lost a mirror during an outing outside the International Space Station (ISS). He was still able to accomplish his mission. The mirror was therefore added to the billions of garbage orbiting around the Earth.

Astronauts regularly conduct extravehicular trips. They are used to maintain the ISS, change faulty parts and ensure that everything performs properly. During these outings, they generally do not have too much time to linger on the magnificent view of the Earth. Indeed, they must carry out their mission while remaining very meticulous and precise. It is not always an easy thing given that their spatial combination is at the very least imposing and bulky. In addition to the survival system and the emergency oxygen reserve, the suit contains different tools and useful objects to work outside the ISS.

Chris Cassidy and Bob Behnken on a mission outside the ISS for 6 hours

Chris Cassidy made this extravehicular trip on June 26th in pairs with Bob Behnken. This last one is arrived on the ISS less than four weeks ago with SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule. During this six-hour mission, the two astronauts aimed to replace a 194 kg battery.

Astronauts have small mirrors, 12 cm long and 7 cm wide, hung on their spacesuits at the wrists. They allow them to see electrical components and blind spots. At one point during the mission, the mirror broke away from Chris Cassidy’s suit. It is now floating in space at a speed of 1 km / h in the company of billion trash that revolves around the Earth. Weighing only 50 grams, it poses absolutely no threat.

Bob Behnken et Chris Cassidy still successfully completed their space mission. They even advanced on their work by finishing the tasks planned for their next and second outing. This will take place on 1st of July.
