An arrowhead from the battle described in the Bible was found in Gath – photo

Archaeologists have found toa cool arrowhead in the ancient Philistine city of Gath in Israel. The tip may have been released by the defenders of the city during the last battle described in the Bible.

About it informs Live Science.

So, according to the Hebrew Bible, a king named Hazael ruled the kingdom of Aram from about 842 BC. e. before 800 BC, conquered Ghat (also known as Tell es-Safi) before marching on Jerusalem.

“Hazael, king of Aram, went and attacked Gath and captured him. Then he turned to attack Jerusalem” – stated in the Book of Kings (2 Kings 12:17).

Archaeological excavations at Gath have shown that massive destruction took place in the late 9th century BC, at a time when the Bible says that Hazael conquered Gath, where the Philistines, who were the enemies of the Israelites at the time, lived.

In 2019, archaeologists discovered a bone arrowhead on the remains of a street in the lower city, which may have been fired upon by the city’s defenders in a desperate attempt to prevent Hazael’s forces from taking over Ghat.

As archaeologists said, the arrowhead has an impact crack and it “was broken near the middle of the shaft, possibly as a result of this blow”… The damage suggests that the tip has hit the target.

This arrowhead may have been produced in a workshop in Ghat, which was desperately trying to make as many bone arrowheads as possible for the city’s defenders.

The workshop, discovered in 2006, is located about 300 meters from the site where the bone arrowhead was found. Within this workshop, archaeologists have found several bones of the lower fore and hind limbs of livestock, suggesting that the people in the workshop were making bone arrowheads.

“The assembly represents bones at various stages of processing – from whole bones, waste to near-finished products.”, the researchers write in the article.

It is noted that this workshop could function as an emergency specialized production center for the supply of arrowheads to combat the forces of Azael from Aram, who laid siege to this place.

The team plans to resume excavation at the site this summer, and future discoveries may provide more clues to the fall of Ghat.

Recall archaeologists have found the oldest tools for creating tattoos, they can be up to 5 thousand years old.
