For months, the International Atomic Energy Agency has been trying to agree on the creation of a safety zone around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, currently occupied by the Russian armed forces, but where Ukrainian workers still work.

“Although the plant itself has been relatively quiet in recent weeks after experiencing intense hostilities about a month ago, the sounds of gunfire can still be heard around the plant, drawing attention to ongoing nuclear safety risks,” he wrote in his latest statement. .

On December 22, Grossi met in Moscow with the head of the Russian nuclear agency “Rosatom”, which currently takes over the management of the Zaporizhia nuclear reactor. Grossi also met with Ukrainian officials.

“Consultations with both sides will continue for the foreseeable future,” the agency added.

On the other hand, the Ukrainian government opposes any step signaling the legitimate recognition of Russia’s presence in the factory.

Last week, Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko called on allied countries to provide Ukraine with modern air defense systems to counter Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, Politico writes.

The Zaporizhia reactor currently does not produce electricity for the Ukrainian grid. External power lines provide electricity for “nuclear safety-critical functions,” while mobile diesel generators provide heat for workers, the agency said, according to Politico.
