“An achievable goal” – Devs Talk Valorant on console – EssentialSports

The Riot Games development team that worked on Valorant recently met Eurogamer in a detailed interview. They talked about the different developments of the game, its release and its future. The team answered many interesting questions, including a future version on consoles.

The main engineer of the Valorant development team had an interesting opinion on the porting of Valorant to the consoles. He was asked if Valorant could ever see a console port, with the current advances in display technology and the processing power of new consoles.

Romero said the biggest challenge in carrying Valorant on consoles is « be able to reproduce the basic gaming experience using a joystick controller.« This is certainly a major problem in all competitive eSports. Controller / console players and PC eSports players have historically separated because they are not on an equal footing.

Valuing on consoles is possible in the near future

The mouse and keyboard configurations give the player much more control over movement and aiming mechanics in the game. This gives PC eSports professionals unfair advantages when playing against their console counterparts.

The reverse is also true, in many cases. More precisely, in Fortnite, the controller vs the mouse and the keyboard is a certain burning problem. Controlling players almost always have a little aiming aid, while playing with joysticks in Fortnite. This again seems to move away from the competitive experience behind the game, which makes the game a lot easier compared to mouse / keyboard players.

The 5v5 tactical shooter took the world by storm.

Romero spoke of this delicate balance, taking care to weigh the fun and competition while using controllers and joysticks. « How much aiming and movement assistance can we provide without sacrificing the overall competitive environment?«

He also talked about how the hardware behind the game consoles caught up with the PCs, to a large extent. « In terms of performance, we believe that operating Valorant at 120 Hz on new generation consoles is an achievable goal.«

However, it has taken note of the limitations of consoles on the market to date. « Being able to push 4K resolution to 120 Hz comes with its own challenges. Even with optimized rendering and pixel shaders with few instructions, rendering a large amount of pixels takes a long time.«

Valorant gained momentum long after his impressive run in beta. If the game could be worn on consoles, with a good balance between competitiveness and pleasure, the new eSport of the decade could be a massive success.
