AMLO wants to remove the 100-year concession from the port of Veracruz … from his own government

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador threatened to eliminate the concession – extended for a century – to the Integral Port Administration (API) of Veracruz, a decentralized company of his own government, whose directors are appointed by the Ministry of Communications and Transportation, that is, They are public officials.

The 16 federal APIs support the National Port System, which is organized into two systems by coastline: the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico-Caribbean.

It is the General Directorate of Port Development and Administration -of the federal government- who coordinates the system through which “businesses are promoted” in federal ports and are directed and controlled by their shareholders, boards of directors, this according to the page itself of the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Maritime.

The Veracruz API, which the president ruled to eliminate the concession, is part of the Gulf of Mexico-Caribbean coastline along with the ports, also government-managed, of Dos Bocas, Progreso, Tampico, Tuxpan, Altamira and Coatzacoalcos.

In addition, API Veracruz has a structure that depends on other secretariats, for example, the Internal Control Body of the port administration responds to the Secretariat of Public Function (SFP).

The API Veracruz receives, like the other 15 administrations, a budget through the Ministry of Communications and Transportation itself.

The Port Law itself indicates that the administration of terminals, facilities and ports of predominantly state influence may be concessioned to “a commercial company constituted by the federal or state government.”
