Thousands of people have tested positive for the bacteria in the northwest China. The National Health Commission (NHC) Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province, recently confirmed 3,245 people had contracted the disease and 1,401 others tested positive.

Luckily, so far there have been no reports of casualties.

The disease is also reported to enter India and started attacking humans and animals. Scientists fear this could turn into a pandemic that could be much worse than the new coronavirus.

What is Brucellosis?

Brucellosis is caused by a group of bacteria belonging to the genus Brucella, which can attack both animals and humans.

It usually spreads to people through direct contact with infected animal fluids, eating raw or unpasteurized dairy products, or breathing contaminated air.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), human-to-human transmission is extremely rare. Human infections are mostly caused by eating contaminated food or inhaling bacteria, which appears to be the case in Lanzhou.

But it can also be spread through sexual contact, and from a nursing mother to her baby. Severe cuts or scrapes on the skin can also make a person susceptible to infection, reports The Health Site.

Plague brucellosis is believed to be caused by a leak at the Zhngmu Lanzhou pharmaceutical plant, which occurred between late July and late August last year.

The factory allegedly used expired disinfectants and cleaners when producing the Brucella vaccine for animal use. This causes some bacteria to leak in the waste gas.

With the number of cases increasing in China, Indian scientists stress the need for extensive brucellosis testing as well as the coronavirus to prevent other pandemics.
