American Publishing Industry Reports 2.6% Drop in 2022 Revenue, Educational Publications Bucks Trend

Estimated at -6.4% in February, the revenues of the American publishing industry finally recorded a drop of 2.6%, reaching 28.1 billion dollars in turnover in 2022 (compared to 28. 85 billion in 2021), according to the final report of the Association of American Publishers (theAssociation of American Publishers, AAP).

The organization presented its report on May 31 StatShot », an annual financial analysis of the book industry across the Atlantic. Compartmentalized by editorial sector, the report indicates that only the market for educational publications, from primary to secondary, was spared, recording an increase of +16.6%, to 5.61 billion dollars.

Adult literature fell 7.1% to $11.22 billion. The same situation for books for children and young adults whose market fell by 6.5%, or 4.87 billion dollars.

Paperbacks and audiobooks fare best

On the format side, large formats saw their sales fall by 13.8%, while sales of paperback books saw their sales remain stable. Audio books continue to grow, with a 2.6% increase in sales.

The data of theAAP relate to 2,252 publishers and distributors who reported $16.15 billion in revenue in 2022. The remaining $11.95 billion in revenue was estimated for non-reporting publishers, using a modeling tool designed by Management Practice, Inc., partner of the association.
