American health authorities warn of a fruit that causes salmonella infection

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States urged citizens to avoid eating some cantaloupe products amid an outbreak of salmonella infection that led to the death of at least two people.

At least 117 people in 34 US states have become ill after eating cantaloupe since mid-October, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

AndThe federal agency said The number of people who become ill due to the outbreak is likely much higher.

At least 61 people were hospitalized and two died in Minnesota.

The agency said it was particularly concerned about the outbreak because the infections were severe and some occurred in health care facilities.

It also said that 14 adults in care facilities and seven children had contracted the disease.

Whole cantaloupes branded Malichita or Rudy were recalled in November, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

These cantaloupes may have labels that say “Malichita,” “Rudy,” “4050” or “Product of Mexico/produit du Mexique,” according to the CDC.

Pre-cut cantaloupes were sold in many stores, such as Aldi and Walmart in some states.

The CDC recommends that people not eat pre-cut cantaloupe if they can’t tell if it comes from a recalled brand.

The Public Health Agency of Canada is also investigating a salmonella outbreak linked to cantaloupe products, with at least 63 cases, according to the newspaper.Wall Street Journal“.

17 people were taken to hospital, and one person died, according to the Canadian agency.

There are about 1.35 million salmonella infections in the United States each year, according to the CDC.

People infected with salmonella may suffer from fever, diarrhea, and stomach cramps, and symptoms begin between six hours and six days after the person is infected.

Many people recover from the disease within a week, but others, especially young children and the elderly, are at risk of more serious infection.

There are about 26,500 hospitalizations and 420 deaths linked to salmonella bacteria each year, according to the CDC.

Salmonella infection occurs when a person eats or drinks contaminated food or water.

People can also become infected after touching infected animals or their surroundings.
