American girl (10) dies of the plague | Abroad

The state has confirmed that her death is related to the plague. This disease is caused by a bacterium, Yersinia pestis. Both humans and animals can become infected. Transmission usually occurs via fleas on, for example, squirrels or dogs.

“We are very saddened. Our deepest condolences go to the family,” Colorado state epidemiologist Jennifer House said. “We are doing research and want to inform everyone that this disease is very rare, but uncommon. Always seek medical attention for symptoms.”

The disease, which killed millions in Europe in the Middle Ages, can now be treated with antibiotics.

Cases are often noticed in rural areas. “We know that fleas can test positive for the plague in the summer months,” House said. “Awareness and precautions can prevent disease in humans.”
