AMD promises: More Ryzen notebooks are coming soon!

In the past two weeks, the new hardware presentations have mainly been related to notebooks. AMD introduced the first notebooks with Ryzen Mobile or Renoir processors, Intel countered with Comet Lake-H. The third teammate joined NVIDIA added and put its mobile graphics cards on the super refresh around.

There has also been widespread discussion in the past few days about which processors are combined with which GPUs and which are not. Apparently Intel can currently be sure of working with NVIDIA because the notebooks with Comet Lake H processors are also combined with a GeForce RTX 2070 Super Max-Q and GeForce RTX 2080 Super Max-Q. We mentioned the first combination together with an Intel Core i7-10875H in the Gigabyte AORUS 15G (test) watched.

Meanwhile, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 (test) use an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Max-Q together with the AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS. This is currently the fastest combination of a Renoir processor and a dedicated graphics card. There is no notebook with a Renoir processor and a GeForce RTX 2070 (Max-Q).

For the foreseeable future, there will be no notebooks with a Renoir processor and a faster graphics card from NVIDIA. Frank Azor, Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions at AMD, confirmed this on Twitter:

It is not known why the combination of a stronger dedicated GPU from NVIDIA with a Renoir processor from AMD will not exist for the time being. The combination of a Renoir processor and a Radeon RX 5500M, Radeon RX 5600M or Radeon RX 5700M is also currently not in sight.

A look at the price comparison shows the current status 68 notebooks with Renoir processors. After all 130 systems with Comet Lake-H are already listed. Far fewer are currently available. Ten notebooks are currently available with a Comet Lake-H, we only speak of six for the Renoir processors, five of which are models of the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14.

Frank Azor also has an explanation: The current situation around the corona virus contributes to delays in the market launch. However, other notebooks with a Renoir processor will soon be available.

Except for the lack of justification for the non-existent range of notebooks with Renoir processors and a faster discrete graphics card, the current delays in the market launch can be understood. It doesn’t look much better at Intel at the moment. Nevertheless, the impression is spreading that AMD, together with its partners, can still not move as freely in the selection of components as is the case for Intel. There is basically nothing against combining a Renoir processor with a GeForce RTX 2070/2080 (Max-Q).

We will soon see how far the collaboration between Intel and NVIDIA and AMD and NVIDIA will go. Together with the GeForce Mobile Super Refresh, NVIDIA introduced the Max-Q Dynamic Boost. It is a technology in which the power can be dynamically allocated between the components. At AMD, this technology is called SmartShift. SmartShift only works between an AMD CPU and an AMD GPU. Max-Q Dynamic Boost should work with both an Intel and an AMD processor and should be platform-independent. The extent to which NVIDIA and AMD will work together will now have to be seen.
