“For Steinmeier, relations with Russia were and remain something fundamental, even sacred, no matter what happens, even aggressive war does not play a big role. From Putin’s point of view, there is no Ukrainian people, no language, no culture, and therefore no state . Steinmeier seems to share the view that Ukrainians are not a subject,” Melnyk said.

Last week, Steinmeier organized a concert of solidarity with Ukraine, which Melnyk ignored because Russian soloists performed there. In an interview with Der Tagesspiegel, Melnik suggested that with this concert, the German president signaled his loyalty to Russia.

Melnik is convinced that Steinmeier, who served as foreign minister for many years before being elected president, bears part of the responsibility for Germany’s heavy dependence on energy from Russia.

“Steinmeier has been weaving a web of contacts with Russia for decades. Many people with significant influence in the current government coalition have been involved in this,” Melnik said, naming the foreign policy adviser to German Chancellor Jens Pletner and State Secretary of the Foreign Ministry Andreas Michaelis.

The ambassador stressed that in the peace talks with Russia, when Steinmeier was still foreign minister, the Germans always tried to get concessions from Ukraine.

Melnik also recalled that even after his re-election for a second term in February 2022, Steinmeier called on Vladimir Putin “loosen the noose around the neck of Ukraine” rather than remove it.

“He has no connection with us, Ukrainians. Steinmeier does not know what to do with us, although he himself was in Kyiv and even in Lvov,” the ambassador stressed.
