Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos Donates $100 Million in Annual Prize

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, in collaboration with his fiancée Lauren Sánchez, has announced the donation of $100 million as part of his annual prize to individuals who have made significant contributions to society. The Bezos Courage and Civility Award, which focuses on finding solutions to complicated problems and fostering unity, will distribute $50 million each to actor and entrepreneur Eva Longoria and retired Navy admiral Bill McRaven.

Previous Recipients of the Bezos Courage and Civility Award

Since its inception in 2021, the Bezos Courage and Civility Award has recognized notable figures for their exceptional work. The inaugural recipients of the prize were Van Jones, a lawyer and CNN commentator, and chef José Andrés, both of whom were awarded $100 million. The 2022 recipient was entertainer and philanthropist Dolly Parton. The 2023 award will not be granted.

Bill McRaven’s Allocation

Bill McRaven, a retired Navy admiral and former chancellor of the University of Texas System, intends to allocate the gifted funds to three areas. Firstly, he plans to focus on the education of children whose parents served in the special operations community and have unfortunately passed away. Secondly, he aims to contribute to the mental health and brain performance of veterans. Lastly, McRaven seeks to support educational initiatives that help develop future military leaders.

Eva Longoria’s Endeavors

Eva Longoria, widely recognized for her role as Gabrielle Solis in the hit TV series Desperate Housewives, has primarily focused her efforts on education and entrepreneurship within Latino communities. Through her Eva Longoria Foundation, Longoria aims to offer mentoring opportunities to Latinos and Latinas in lower-income areas. Additionally, she has established a start-up fund to support Latino-owned small businesses. Longoria expressed her eagerness to invest in the strength and potential of the Latino community.
