Amazon admits employees must urinate in bottles

(New York) Amazon apologized on the company’s blog for lying to a congressman over a week ago. The e-commerce giant had denied in a text message to Democratic Representative Mark Pocan that some of its employees worked so hard that they had to urinate in empty water bottles not to give up their jobs.

Amazon eventually had to admit that some of its delivery drivers may have had to urinate in bottles. The company is committed to improving their working conditions.

The issue was first raised on March 24 by Mr Pocan following a micro-message from an Amazon executive claiming the company was a progressive place to work.

“Paying workers $ 15 an hour doesn’t make you a ‘progressive workplace’ when you engage in anti-union practices and force workers to urinate in water bottles,” the politician replied.

Amazon then replied, “You don’t really think people urinate in bottles, do you?” If it was true, no one would work for us. ”

In a post on Friday night, Amazon apologized to Mr Pocan. The company acknowledged that its delivery drivers “can and have difficulty finding toilets due to traffic or sometimes in rural areas.” She pointed out that COVID-19 has made the problem worse, as many public toilets are closed.

“Sigh!” Mr. Pocan replied on Saturday. It’s not about me, it’s about your employees, whom you don’t treat with enough respect or dignity. ”

Amazon wrote in its blog post that urinating in bottles is a trucking industry-wide problem. In an attempt to prove his point, he shared links to news articles about drivers from other companies who had to do so.

“Regardless of whether this is industry wide, we would like to resolve it,” the company said. We do not yet know how to do this, but will look for solutions. ”

Working conditions at Amazon have recently found themselves in the spotlight. Warehouse workers voted last week on their possible unionization. Many complain about grueling 10-hour workdays that only include two 30-minute breaks.

Amazon did not respond to a request for comment.
